What can you make with chocolate? Chocolate squares recipe!

Ever wonder, what can you make with chocolate? I have.

That set me down the dessert recipe page from my grandmothers handwritten cookbook.

I came across a great dessert, which is fun to make. And even better to eat these sweet treats.

What is it, you ask? It is a chocolate squares recipe.

This recipe is oh-so-good-and-oh-so-rich and will make you wonder why you don’t move to France where chocolate dishes are the norm.

The dessert does take time to prepare, though. It uses three layers — the first of which is cooked, the second chilled hard, and the third cooled in the fridge overnight.

In total, it takes about 30 minutes preparation time and about 20 minutes cooking. The cool down times are quite long and not included in the time estimate.

Ingredients

5 squares unsweetened chocolate
1 1/2 sticks butter
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 cup flour
4 ounces crushed pecans
2 cups powdered sugar
2 tablespoons cream or evaporated milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 9×13 pan.

Layer 1: A sweet cookie base

Melt 2 squares unsweetened chocolate with 4 tablespoons butter (1/2 stick). After the mixture is melted, let it cool off slightly.

In a mixing bowl, beat 2 eggs until they are frothy. Stir in the butter and chocolate mixture, 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup flour, 4 ounces of pecans and mix.

Bake the mixture for 16 minutes at 350 degrees F.

After the first layer is cooked, let it cool before starting the second layer. (I let mine cool for about 1 hour.)

Layer 2: Filling

In a mixing bowl, add 4 tablespoons melted butter, 2 cups powered sugar, 2 tablespoons heavy cream, 1/2 tablespoon of vanilla.

Spread the filling over the cookie layer. Chill the layer. (I put mine in the freezer for 30 minutes to harden the filling fairly quick.)

Layer 3: More chocolate

Melt 3 squares unsweetened chocolate and 4 tablespoons butter (1/2 stick). Pour mixture over hardened second layer. Refrigerate the dish overnight.

Cut into squares.

Yumminess begins

Kids and adults love this dessert. It will quench a sweet tooth’s itch and is worth making on special occasions. I hope you found this recipe for chocolate squares yummy and useful.
